Welcome to Fenton, Michigan
Fenton is a city that earns its motto -- "Be Closer" -- every single day. Closer to lakes, closer to nature, closer to a genuine downtown with restaurants and shops that feel like they belong there, and closer to neighbors who actually know each other. With a population of approximately 12,000 and a location straddling three counties -- Genesee, Livingston, and Oakland -- Fenton occupies a genuinely unique position in Southeast Michigan, both geographically and in terms of character.
Founded in 1834 and originally called Dibbleville after first settler Clark Dibble, the city was renamed in 1837 -- according to local legend -- after William M. Fenton won a card game against a rival land speculator. Fenton later became Michigan's lieutenant governor. That same community spirit, colorful history, and independent identity has defined Fenton ever since. The city was incorporated as a village in 1863 and achieved cityhood in 1964.
Today, Fenton is consistently rated one of the most desirable communities in Genesee County. The Shiawassee River flows through the heart of downtown, feeding a network of lakes and connecting Fenton to the broader Southern Lakes region. With a cost of living roughly 18 percent below the national average, a school district that ranks in the top 20 percent in Michigan, and a real estate market that offers exceptional value compared to comparable communities in Metro Detroit, Fenton attracts buyers from across the state and beyond who want quality of life without overpaying for it.

History of Fenton, Michigan
Fenton, Michigan was first established in 1834 and was actually named after one of it's first settlers Clark Dibble. The name Dibbleville as the towns established name would carry on until 1837 when William Fenton named it after himself as Fentonville. The post office records show the name Fentonville was used until 1886 when the name Fenton was adopted and is still the current name of the city.
The town of Fenton, Michigan had it's largest change in it's history during the 1970's when developers brought proposal to the city for an urban development project that would level most of the historic downtown buildings and build a more strip mall style set of buildings. Looking back at the past, many current city residents and even city officials see this as one of the biggest disasters ever to hit to small town of 11,000 people. There was the much talked about F2 tornado to hit Fenton in 2007 causing some major damage in the downtown area, but the city would recover fast and get lucky with only minor injuries reported.
In 2011 residents would see a major change coming with the first large building development to be approved in downtown along Leroy St. Named the cornerstone building, it would consist of over 30,000 square feet of retail, office, and residential and put the first stake in the ground toward a downtown redevelopment plan the city had hoped for. The good news would keep coming in 2013 with the multi-million dollar renovation of the old Fenton Fire Station into the Fenton Fire Hall, a modern american restaurant with multiple levels, outdoor seating, a rooftop area, and more.
2016 would continue to bring more good news for the downtown of Fenton with the remodeling of older buildings and new business emerging such as an expansion of Crust bakery, El Topo Mexican Street Food, Relief & Resource Speakeasy Bar, and more. Downtown Fenton, Michigan has continued to be one of the most thriving cities in Michigan and clearly has a bright future ahead of it.
