The Community of Clarkston, MI

Officially known as the City of the Village of Clarkston, the community here is tight knit. This is because the population is low, and it’s also the smallest city by land area in Michigan. Life in Clarkston is small town and city life all at once.

Just off Interstate 75, Clarkston is accessible from anywhere. It’s nice for the residents here to know that Detroit is only 45 minutes away, about 45 miles driving. It’s not even an hour away from Ann Arbor, another popular Michigan destination. Options for day trips to the big city are possible here, and so is commuting for work.

Even if Clarkston is a small city, it doesn’t mean the shopping is. Michigan’s largest mall -- Great Lakes Crossing Outlets -- is only minutes away from Clarkston. More than just a large retail hub, CLarkston also has the Pine Knob Golf Club, Deer lake Athletic Club, and the DTE Energy Music theater for amazing live concerts and performances.

To live or visit Clarkston is to enjoy the great outdoors. The area is abundant with green parks and pristine lakes in the quiet residential neighborhoods here. Depot Park has free summer concerts, Deer Lake is a popular spot to get in the water or lie on the beach, and the Sleeping Bear Dunes is a unique Michigan landscape that’s fun to explore with the entire family.

In these public outdoor spaces are chances to connect and relax, and also take part in many of the annual festivals, like the Michigan Renaissance Festival, the Clarkston Crafts & Cider Festival, and the Taste of Clarkston, a celebration of food from across the world.

History of Clarkston

A small Shanty was the first home ever built in Clarkston, and that was back in 1830. Two years later, the second house was built, alongside a plot of land that would see a sawmill built that same year.

Ten years later, the area that was now a village was named Clarkston, with borders, a post office, and several new properties.

The community continued to slowly grow with new residents until Clarkston was officially named a city in 1992. Today, Clarkston celebrates its storied past by preserving the original townsite within its own city. The Clarkston Village Historical District has many streets with monuments, artifacts, and buildings still seen and in use today.

Clarkston is a Michigan State Historical Site, and is also on the National Register of Historical Places.
